The Level of Korea's Advancement Based on SERI's Advancement Indicators
Release Date: June 30, 2010
Korea's national vision is to emerge as a first-rate, advanced nation. Korea's efforts for advancement have come to fruition as evidenced by the Korean economy ranking 15th globally and being the host of the G20 Summit. However, the journey to become a developed country has yet to be completed. According to a survey by the Samsung Economic Research Institute on public opinion on national advancement, the general public thinks that it will take about 7.7 years for Korea to become a developed country. The report has come up with the following seven requirements that determine a nation's advancement: dynamism, pride, autonomy, creativity, reciprocity, diversity, and happiness.

Korea is a proud and happy nation, but will be slow to reach its goal based on the seven requirements. Korean students, as a result of the flawed and overbearing education system have a severe lack of creativity and autonomy, and reject diversity. Korean society as a whole lacks diversity and often shuns the idea. Society in Korea likes to think of the country as autonomous, but the country is far from it. Daewoo and Samsung produce automobiles only because of foreign ownership in the companies. Korea has a space program only because of foreign aid and technology. Samsung, Daewoo, and Hyundai produce technologically advanced ships only by means of foreign knowledge, materials, and labor.
Korea is a wonderful nation with wonderful people, but lacks diversity, creativity, autonomy, and dynamism. The sooner that Korean society accepts the fact that they are dependent on other countries for survival in every way, the sooner Korea can begin to grow and reach its goals. July 13, 2010
