Acting to further the interests of others ultimately serves self-interest

The mighty Toyota has been suffering from the biggest-ever crisis in the wake of the recent recalls of unprecedented proportions. The debacle is thought-provoking in that it was not brought on by a formidable rival's attack but by problems with the corporate ecosystem surrounding its vendors - namely, parts suppliers. Just as healthy people become ill from breathing in polluted air, well-established companies are also incapable of achieving sustainable growth in an unhealthy ecosystem. Therefore, attention should be paid to a corporate perspective that perceives suppliers, distributors, rivals, customers, society and the environment as strategic partners needed to secure a competitive edge.
