Highlights

I. Environmental Policy Tools Used to Guide Macroeconomic Policy

  1. The State Council sent investigative teams to 12 provinces for investigation of new projects and to prevent a rebound in fixed asset investment. Environmental inspections turned into a main component of the teams' investigations.
  2. The Chinese government is currently thinking about provisions to include environmental protection as a main consideration in macroeconomic policies. In addition to quickening the legislation timetable, the government is also trying to create an environmental assessment process at the local level, changing the government's basic promotion criteria.

II. China's Home-Grown Technology Adopted as Mobile Phone TV Standard

  1. China launched its own technology standard for mobile TV broadcasting. China's State Administration of Radio, Film and TV (SARFT) introduced the Satellite Terrestrial Interactive Multi-service Infrastructure (StiMi), a home-grown mobile-phone TV standard on October 24.
  2. Overseas manufacturers, meanwhile, need to continue to offer existing standards as part of their global strategy, while rolling out products that match China's home-grown standards as a means to advance into the Chinese market earlier than others. Foreign companies could also form close relationship with the governmental agencies directly in charge of developing industry standards
