I. Industry

The rising competitiveness of Chinese companies has drawn increasing attention on their activity in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). For the most part, their international M&A experience has produced less than desirable results. For example, TCL Corp., a major consumer electronics manufacturer, suffered substantial financial distress after merging with Thomson in 2004.

In contrast, many multinational companies (MNCs) have enjoyed success in China by acquiring prominent domestic firms and brands. Unilever acquired two local toothpaste brands in 1999, ultimately integrating the products into its existing business line.

Given the intense nature of the Chinese business environment domestic companies will need to improve their strategic use of M&As to increase their competitiveness at home and abroad.
