Highlights:

I. Economy

In China, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which declined for six consecutive months in 2009 marked a record low in July, sending mixed signals to talks of a possible inflation. From March 2009, real estate prices rebounded again with housing in certain urban areas hitting a record high. This report looks at the causes behind the surge in real estate prices, and presents policy implications to maintain a balance between bubbles and economic growth. The Chinese government will continue to pursue policies to prevent bubbles and maintain the growth momentum of the real estate industry.

II. Industry

Baidu Inc., which runs China's largest search engine, formed a strategic alliance with Discovery Networks Asia (DNAP) in July 2009 to launch the Chinese version of the Discovery Channel website (discovery.baidu.com). Baidu is in charge of setup and operation of the Discovery Channel Chinese website, while Discovery is responsible for providing the latest science and education contents. The strategic alliance between Baidu and Discovery Channel would contribute to enhancing their brand power in China, while enabling them to share resources in a mutually-benefiting manner.
