I. Economy

Since China's State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) announced its plan to develop HDTV in August 2008, the distribution of HDTV has increased dramatically in China. Nine HDTV channels including CCTV started a pilot service of HD programs, and HDTV was one of the most popular consumer electronics during the National Day of China on October 1. The report analyzes the causes behind the HDTV's rapid rise and its impact on TV market.

II. Industry

An increasing number of Chinese companies are accelerating efforts to strengthen their brand power through the acquisition of foreign brands. Recently, the property rights to Pierre Cardin in China was sold to a Chinese company, followed by Hong Kong YGM's acquisition of the right to possess and manage Aquascutum in Asia. Sichuan Tengzhong is also in talks with GM to acquire the latter's Hummer brand. The acquisition of foreign brands is an opportunity but also a risk for Chinese companies.
