Highlights:

I. Economy

In September 2009, the US President Barack Obama ratified the imposition of a punitive tariff on tires imported from China. The report analyzes the impact of the US action on Chinese trade and provides some guidelines on the role of the Chinese government to resolve trade conflict with the US. The imposition of a tariff will have a negative impact on Chinese tire exports which amounts to US$2 billion, but the impact will be limited as tire exports only account for 2% of total Chinese exports.

II. Industry

Foxconn, an OEM front-runner in the 3C product area, formulated a blueprint in September 2009, aimed at establishing its own distribution network in mainland China by setting up 10,000 chain stores. Within the next three years, Foxconn intends to invest 10 billion Taiwanese dollars to set up as many as 10,000 3C chain stores in China, as part of its efforts to turn itself from an OEM producer towards a retail distribution giant.
