Convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting in Korea is triggering competition in relevant sectors. Cable TV operators are rapidly increasing their share in the high-speed Internet market, an area previously dominated by telecommunications service operators. A broader distribution of Internet phone service from the second half of 2005 on the strength of the government's designation of related service providers will further expand cable TV service providers' influence in the telecommunications market. Telecommunications operators are also redoubling efforts to stay ahead of the competition. They want to move into the broadcasting market with Internet protocol TV (IPTV) services, a Web-based TV that transmits broadcasting programs through wireless networks.
