According to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, global credit rating agency Standard and Poor's decided to retain Korea's sovereign credit rating at "A+" and outlook as "stable." The credit rating agency's decision was backed by Korea's sound fiscal conditions, robust net external creditor position and favorable policy environment. The rating agency said it can upgrade the nation's rating in the future if its per capita gross domestic product increases and short-term external debt decreases. However, geopolitical risks on the Korean peninsula and potential cost of reunification with North Korea still remain as major weaknesses in Korea's credit fundamentals, the rating agency reported.
